William Hanks

Hanks earned the Joint PhD in Linguistics and Anthropology from University of Chicago, where he taught in both departments from 1983 until 1996. He moved to UC Berkeley (2000-pres), where he served as Chair of the Anthropology Department (2001-2006)  and founding Director of Social Science Matrix  (2013-2019). A specialist of the language, culture and history of Yuatec Maya people, he was awarded a John Simon Memorial Guggenheim Fellowship  in 1996, and presented the Conférence Eugène Fleischman Société d’Ethnologie Française, Paris (2007). His most important works include Referential Practice, Language and lived space among the Maya (1990), Language Communicative Practices (1996) and Converting Words, Maya in the Age of the Cross (2010), which won the Edward Sapir Book Prize and the Staley Prize. Hanks's work examines deixis and indexicality, embodiment and spatial orientation, and the historical formation of modern Maya language under Spanish colonization.
