Albert Backus

Ad Backus got his PhD in 1996 with a thesis on codeswitching and language mixing and has continued a career in the study of bilingualism, language contact and various subdisciplines in linguistics. He has been a Full Professor at Tilburg University in the Netherlands since 2012. Much of his work adopts a usage-based approach to language and culture. He has been the Chief Editor of the International Journal of Bilingualism and has served one term as Chair of the associated International Symposium on Bilingualism. Throughout his career, he has attempted to explore the opportunities provided by combining psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic approaches to the study of language and language-related sociocultural issues, working with PhD students in these related but often separated fields. He aims to present a summary of these exploits in the Paris seminar.
